David Darling has always been my favorite cellist, since I heard him with Paul Winter Consort in 1975. We played a magical concert together in 1989 at the Transpersal Psychology conference. Audience members wanted to buy our album right then. I had to wait till February 2009 for David to join me in the studio in February 2009 on one of his rare West Coast appearances. It was worth the wait.

I pre-produced a series of ethereal soundscapes, which David spontaneously improvised over. On some tracks, as he got deeper into the music, some exquisite melodies came through, but only near the end of the track.

They were so good, I wanted to hear them more than once, and much earlier. Working with my long-time creative partner and master engineer Warren Kahn, we improved upon the original version.

ADAGIO for STRINGS and SOUL deserved to be the title track of an entire playlist of our collaborations.

At long last, it finally is. This is now part of my all-time Top Ten recordings of my entire career.

I featured four of our original duets on my 2009 “RELAXATION SUITE”. In 2014, I composed new arrangements using only his solo tracks and new keyboard textures.

After David’s unexpected passing in 2021, it felt appropriate to delay the release of our collaborations.

Then, the devastating fire in Maui delayed the scheduled 11/11/23 release. I immediately added humpbacked whale songs and made “ADAGIO for LAHAINA” part of the project.
